Roxy Jam Biarritz

ASP Womens World Longboard Championship
Cote des Basques, Biarritz France
10 - 14 July 2010

Surfing, Art, and Music…. provide the potency for Roxy's cocktail

The unique mixed concept of Women's Longboard Word Championships with a renowned live-music venue makes Roxy Jam Biarritz an important part of this summer's events. Against the dreamy backdrop of the Basque Coast, nestled between the cliffs and Villa Belza, two-steps from the idyllic sands of the Port Vieux beach, Roxy Jam Biarritz will host five days of competitive surfing, music concerts and art exhibitions.

Highlights of this year's 2010 edition:

The ASP Women's World Longboard Championships unites 32 of the world's best women surfers, all with their eye on the world crown currently held by Californian Jennifer Smith, winner of the 2007 and 2009 Biarritz events.

The Roxy Jam Biarritz expo has adopted "recycling" as this year's theme. Remarkable and poetic, the art works to be exhibited will be created with recycled materials, crafted by the German artist Gesa Rongue and the Spanish artist Zako. A collection of boards owned by some of the world's best surfers, customized by renowned artists will be also be presented by Lee-Ann Curren and her Titanzinho association.

By Orange, a live pop-rock music venue is to take place on the Port Vieux beach on July 10 with Micky Green, Plastiscines and La Femme.

Hailing from Australia, the sublime Micky Green has a passion for surfing and the ocean. Roxy Jam was tailor made for her! Based in Paris, her first album White T-Shirt was a hit with 180,000 albums sold and a nomination for the French equivalent of the Grammies, the 'Victoires de la Musique'. Now with her second album, Honky Tonk, this multi-instrumentalist talent has risen to "Queen of Pop" status.

And the Parisian quartet, Plastiscines, who conquered the New World with their second album, About Love, produced by Butch Walker (Pink, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry) and graced the hip television series Gossip Girl with a cameo appearance. A quirky blend of charming sass and punk pop, Plastiscines have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of previous guests at the Roxy Jam, who included CSS, Neneh Cherry and Santigold.

On July 13 at 7pm, the ‘bar des 100 marches’ will host a live DJ set which will then migrate to the Beaurivage esplanade. This is the chance to discover ‘the next electro-music prodigy’, brought to you via the European contest “JBL Next Girl DJ”, as well as the cocktails at the ‘bar des 100 marches’. The DJ set will continue on the Beaurivage esplanade with an electro line-up featuring Miss Kittin, who will mix into the dark to complete this unforgettable night.

For the fifth consecutive year, Roxy Jam Biarritz will host the ASP Women's World Longboard Championships, uniting 32 of the world's best women surfers in one place, Biarritz.

Despite the century-long heritage of the longboard and its place in the roots of surf culture, longboarding arrived on the competitive scene relatively recently. At the initiative of Roxy, the ASP established the Women's World Longboard Championships in 2006. The title of ASP World Longboard Champion is awarded annually in Biarritz. A qualifying tour (Women's Longboard Qualifying) narrows the competition to 32 of the best women longboarders in the world, who will then meet in Biarritz for the final showdown.

The Women's Competition Director, Philipe Malvaux, has five days (July 10 to 14) to see our 32 candidates catch their waves in pursuit of the World Championship Title. As the local surfing expert, Philipe will schedule and plan the competitions to find the ideal tides, forecasts and conditions, and the best spots in Biarritz.

From the first round, the 32 surfers will be divided into 16 ‘one on one’ match-ups and must give their absolute best to avoid direct elimination. By the second round half of the competitors will already have been knocked out. A panel of professional ASP judges will score on the surfer’s commitment, style, difficulty and successful completion of moves as well as their choice of wave. There is a USD 50,000 combined prize-list, with USD 10,000 going to the winner.

Since its debut, the ASP Women's World Longboard Championships has been won by Californians Schuyler McFerran in 2006 and Jennifer Smith in 2007 and 2009, and Hawaiian Joy Monahan in 2008.  This shows a stark indication of American and Hawaiian domination over the sport.

While Jennifer Smith, two-time winner at Biarritz and last year's World Champion, remains a favourite with her radical and elegant style, her fellow Americans, Kassia Meador, the forever Queen of Style, Summer Romero or Leah Dawson may spoil the party. The mostly likely candidate from the Hawaiian contingent is without question, the irresistible Kelia Moniz, who just comes off of completing one of her best seasons.

On the French and Australian sides, ambitions and the appetite to win loom just as large. The skill level separating California and Hawaii from the rest of the world is narrowing.

With natural style, the French women Coline Ménard and Justine Dupont represent the growing presence of European longboard surfers. Two runner up World Champions with radically different styles: Coline, second in the world in 2009 loves to carve in the purest tradition of the longboard; while Justine, second in 2007 surfs a more radical, more aggressive and rhythmic style, a characteristic of her success in the shortboard discipline. Among the top seeds is the leading member of the Australian contingent, Chelsea Williams who was runner up World Champion in 2008 and semi-finalist in 2009, as well as Isabelle Braly.

New comer
The young Brazilian Chloe Calmon, daughter of the former longboard king, Miguel Calmon, won a wild card and will compete in her first World Championships aged just 16.

Jennifer Smith (USA) - 24 years old
She already boasts two World Longboard Champion titles, one in 2007 and the other in 2009. Today, Jen Smith is quite simply the queen of this discipline, capable of the most incredible moves. This year, the Californian hopes to defend her title and wear the international crown for a third time.

Kassia Meador (USA) - 28 years old
The sparkling American will again grace us with her presence at the Roxy Jam in pursuit of her first World Championship title. Riding in the ASP tour for the last decade, she has taken the skill and elegance of her surfing style around the world. Kassia is today one of the world's best known, most imitated and admired surfers. Eliminated in the quarterfinals last year, she’ll be determined to fulfil her dream of taking home the Roxy Jam title.

Chelsea Williams (AUS) - 24 years old
Runner up World Champion in 2008, and tied for third place in 2009, Chelsea Williams is among the favourites to win this year's title. After a beautiful domination of last year's tour, the Australian has high hopes of taking the ultimate crown home this year. Known for her forceful and deliberate surfing style, the surfer from Tweed Heads will no doubt win over the ASP's demanding judges.

Coline Ménard (FRA) – 22 years
Last year's finalist, Coline Ménard has shown she has the experience and the bag of tricks she needs to win her first international title this year. Considered to be among the best European surfers, the young Frenchwoman is known for her grace and agility on the board. Coline splits her time between her professional longboarding career and her studies in Bordeaux.

Justine Dupont (FRA) - 18 years old
A semi-finalist last year, Justine Dupont is one of the most versatile surfers. Just as capable on a shortboard as well as on the longboard, this young Frenchwoman surfs both disciplines for the French national team. Justine is known for her anticipation and undeniable technical qualities. This year, she will have her work cut out against the competitors with more experience and those who are genuine longboard specialists.

Kelia Moniz (HAW) - 20 years old
Introduced to surfing by her father and four brothers, the beautiful Hawaiian quickly found her passion for longboarding. Gifted with an unrivalled natural elegance, the Hawaiian belle is without question one of the most serious candidates to win this year's title. A noseriding virtuoso, Kelia has the multiple gifts of talent, style and agility. A quarter finalist last year, she will lay it all on the line to go further in this year's new edition of Roxy Jam.

Chloe Calmon (BRA) - 16 years old - Wild Card
Daughter of the famous longboarder Miguel Calmon, the young Brazilian has naturally followed in the footsteps of her father. Chloe began surfing the beaches of Rio de Janeiro at the age of 11. One year later, she began participating in her first national competitions and then later internationally.  Described as dogged and determined by her older competitors, she continues to progress from one competition to the next. This year will be her first time competing at Roxy Jam. Now is her golden opportunity to show the skills she'll need to do battle among the elite of women's longboard.

CONCERT TENT
Each summer, Roxy Jam Biarritz assembles an attractive musical line-up featuring today's most in vogue female artists and up-and-coming talents. Not to be outdone by years past, Roxy Jam presents an exceptional concert line-up. This time it’s up to Plastiscines and Micky Green to fire up the sands of the famous Port Vieux beach on July 10. The Australian pop diva, the French glam rock sensation and the group La Femme, will make this one of the absolute ‘not to be missed’ events of the summer.

A new 100% electro music venue this time around will happen above the 100 Marches on July 13, in the Beaurivage parking lot. A host of 'DJettes' will be there, including Miss Kittin, Estelle Surbranche and the winner of the European ‘Next DJ Girl’ contest, sponsored by JBL and Roxy.
These live open-air concerts are free to the public.

Micky Green Bio

In 2007, Michaela completed her childhood dream in becoming Micky Green; she recorded her first album in France, White T-Shirt. Self-authored and produced by Renaud Letang (Manu Chao, Feist…), the lo-fi and minimalist pop of White T-Shirt discovers the seductive side of the shabby chic world.

Her childhood dream has since become a reality. Highlights include: 180,000 albums sold; an unequivocal hit with ‘Oh’; numerous concerts and festivals and a nomination at the ‘Victoires de la Musique’.  After initially just testing the waters, her musical career was clearly a masterstroke for the Australian artist.

In 2009, her time had come. A more mature, confident artist returned with a second album still characteristic of her roots. Her glam pop style is still there. Yet, it's been further enhanced with an irresistibly smooth groove, accompanied by vintage pianos, sensual bass lines, and transcendental ghost notes.

Her new well-balanced repertoire reflects the earthiness of her compositions created using her home computer, or with drums, Micky's choice instrument since the age of 11. The songs reflect a more intense, languid sensuality, typical of the artists mostly closely influencing the Honky Tonk Woman, such as Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Erykay Badu, or James Brown.

Returning once again to the Ferber studio in Paris and accompanied by her usual crew, Micky Green has composed her second hit, Honky Tonk, recently released in January 2010. First song on the album released in December 2009 was lauded with success. Micky Green is a pop star extraordinaire whose image sells magazines like hotcakes and who makes her fiercest critics go weak at the knees.

Hailing from Australia, she has a special attachment to the sea and the sport of surfing, which she continues to practise on a regular basis. Surfing is indeed an important component in the life of Micky Green. When asked in a recent interview who her ideal dinner guests would be, she chose Madonna, Prince and... Kelly Slater!  So it comes as no surprise that Micky Green will include the Roxy Jam Biarritz as one of her key summer venues.Micky Green will play on the Port Vieux beach, followed by Plastiscines on July 10 at the Roxy Jam Biarritz.

Plastiscines

It’s the story of four high-school girlfriends living in Paris who shared the same affinity for 70's music and together, decided to form a band. While listening to the Beatles track Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967) they came up with the name of their band: Plastiscines. It's a brilliant expression of their sound, a blend of punk, new-wave pop and quirky girly look.

Their first album, LP1 in 2007, was a collaboration with Maxime Schmitt, producer for Jacques Dutronc. They made the headlines of Rock&Folk and had already earned live TV appearances. Despite the success of their first hit, Made in France, the four young women decided to quietly take their chances on the other side of the pond, working on a new album with Butch Walker, producer for Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Pink.

This collaboration produced the About Love album in 2009 whose title song B.I.T.C.H became a raving success and propelled these 'petites françaises' to the top of the American charts. They even graced the hip television series Gossip Girl, playing their hit title in a cameo appearance.
Against the dreamy backdrop of the Port Vieux beach, their live act will follow Micky Green on July 10, helping make this a truly unforgettable concert.

La Femme

On this unique occasion, we have invited these young, hip musicians to perform at the Roxy Jam. La Femme are originally from Biarritz and are now based in Paris. Their sensational beats are from another time and place. They excel at breaking the mould on traditional music standards, and are close to the surfers, themselves musicians, such as Lee-Ann Curren and Pandora Decoster.

The Roxy Jam and their affinity with surf culture are a perfect opportunity for them to return to their native lands and kick off this night of music in style on the Port Vieux beach on July 10.

On Tuesday, July 13 at 7pm, the ‘bar des 100 marches’ will host an all-girl live DJ Set. By 9pm, it will migrate to the Beaurivage esplanade, which overlooks the Basque Coast of Biarritz.

The winner of the European ‘Next Girl DJ’ competition will have the opportunity to play during the traditional cocktail hours of the ‘100 marches’. The sponsors of the competition, Roxy and the audio specialist, JBL, have decided to promote female artists and show off the world's future turntable virtuosos.

To understand this competition process - contestants from all over Europe were chosen from the mixes they posted on the site and were put to an internet-wide vote and subjected to a jury of music professionals. Breaking through to the semi-finals, the best met for DJ live battles in Paris, London, Berlin and Brussels.  From here the four finalists have each composed a final beach-themed mix. Following the Internet vote and input from an expert panel, the winning ‘Djette’ will be invited to mix live at Roxy Jam Biarritz, inviting us into her musical universe well into the night.

Later that same evening, other ‘Djettes’ will take their turn on the stage to mix under the stars, looking out over the water on the ‘100 marches’ esplanade. The famous and sprightly ‘Djette’ from the Ritz, and chief editor of Flavor magazine, Estelle Surbranche, will bid a temporary farewell to her Parisian nights, for the chance to also mix at the Roxy Jam.

The evening will continue in the company of Miss Kittin. A former student at the Amiens Ecole Supérieure of Art and Design, this French ‘Djette’ has in a very short time, become a muse of the underground scene and a representative of style. She is known for playing tight energetic and heavy beat laden dance mixes. Her eclectic musical tastes are reflected in the high-pitched pop singing style she puts to some of the more techno nuanced tracks. Originally hailing from Grenoble, she will be at the Roxy Jam to invigorate us with her crescendo tracks.

Coline Menard : photo Roxy

Ever since the Roxy Jam was created, Roxy has purposefully chosen to mix sport with the environment, its influences and its lifestyle. More than any other sport, surfing and especially longboarding, is the medium of a culturally rich universe. Both tradition and modernity act as a source of inspiration for many artists influenced by the surf culture.

In the previous five events, Roxy Jam has helped to exhibit the work of plastic artists, photographers, graphic artists, sculptors and painters who claim a bond with the surf culture and of course the ocean.

The Roxy Jam Biarritz exhibition has adopted ‘recycling’ as this year's theme and has titled it, ‘Roxy Second Wave’. Roxy offers creative support as a way to honour artists using recycled materials and will present a collection of unique and dazzling works of art, for the visitor's viewing pleasure.

The guests for 2010: Gesa Ronge and Zako, two artists who draw their inspiration from board culture.

Born in Germany and a former fine art student, Gesa Ronge has chosen to live in France in the Gironde region. This artist, who has been inspired by the sea and her travels, makes use of all types of materials while her biggest inspiration comes from wood. Crafting a massive wave with driftwood, she was able to make her mark among European circles.

Gesa will come to the Roxy Jam to exhibit her ‘Fenêtre sur l’Océan (Window on the Ocean) right on the Basque Coast. This creation, no less personal or poetic than the wave, is once again constructed of driftwood. She loves the natural material, its rough surface, the irregularities and heaviness, all symbolize an unwavering quality to her. The sculpture is a giant frame representing a living tableau set out over the ocean. With this work, Gesa allows the viewer to determine their own view by choosing their own perspective. The scenery, captured and isolated from its surrounding environment, takes on a new dimension and invites us to look at this living tableau differently and rethink the way we see the ocean.

Born in 1971 in the Spanish Basque country, Zako is best known for her aerial sculptures of outsized proportions and her talent in reviving used materials.

Following a heralded career as a professional snowboarder (7-time Spanish Champion who also cracked the Top 10 at the World Snowboard Championship) Zako decided to take a different path in her life after the birth of her baby. This personal life change prompted her to begin making use of her creative talent through unique works of art formed from, a simple piece of wire. Quickly enough, her metallic creations found a home in prestigious galleries in Switzerland, Germany and France.

Despite making her presence known in the art world, Zako went into eyewear distribution alongside a manufacturer, who sadly went out of business. Bouncing back from her unsuccessful venture, and with Roxy's support, Zako went on to make use of defective lenses as the primary material in her new work. The spectacular chandelier measuring 1 1/2 metres high, composed of 3,100 used or defective lenses (1,550 pairs of glasses!) will be on display at the Roxy Jam Biarritz expo is a prime example.

Lee-Ann Curren, the only European surfer on the ASP Women’s World Tour 2010, has put her project Titanzinho in motion this year. This project is the fruit of her travels and encounters with the inhabitants of the favela, Titanzinho, located just outside of the town of Fortaleza in Brazil, the home-town of her boyfriend, André Silva.

Lee-Ann was deeply affected by the misery and the many social ills (drugs, alcoholism, violence), which threaten the youngest members of society in particular. So, as a way of offering them an alternative to a delinquent lifestyle, she used her camera to help share the daily life of these forgotten faces in order to generate support and gather funds to pay for surfboards to be given to children in the favela.

At the young age of 20, Lee-Ann has collected through her travels, a unique collection of a dozen or so surfboards graciously donated by prestigious surfers such as Kelly Slater, Stephanie Gilmore, Jérémy Florès, Mick Fanning and Tom Curren, which have been customized by renowned artists.

A part of this unique and exceptional collection will be exhibited in a preview at the Roxy Jam Biarritz and later auctioned in London this September, in order to gather the necessary funds to complete her project.

Roxy Charity Shop

The Roxy Charity Shop serves as a gallery of surfing paraphernalia and an authentic surf shop, where collectors and novices can get their boards, items, even ‘relics’ of champions which have been donated by pros, sponsors, friends of the Roxy brand, or collected from employees and other departments of Quiksilver.

This surf-motif Charity Shop will be on-site at the Roxy Jam Biarritz from July 10 to 14 and will have these must-have items on display for all surfers and fans (vintage t-shirts, posters, books, watches, bracelets, etc.). A kind of surfing museum, with everything’s for sale and all proceeds go to the Quiksilver Foundation, who will then donate part to the Breast Cancer association ‘Cancer du Sein, Parlons-En !’, which works for the detection and prevention of the disease.

The artist Gesa Ronge, a student at the Hamburg Fine Arts School, has also donated some of her sketches to be screen printed on a limited series of t-shirts to be sold in benefit of the Quiksilver Foundation.

Roxy Jam Biarritz reduces its footprint!

For many years now, Quiksilver has been adopting measures to ensure that its events have a limited impact on the environment, in line with the company's commitments across all levels of its operation.
The Roxy Jam Biarritz strictly adheres to this philosophy and also commits to:

REDUCE…
- plastic waste by promoting the use of water fountains and reusable containers over individual water bottles and throwaway containers.
- the use of pre-packaged items and the amount of waste.
- electricity use with energy saving appliances and devices and by promoting the use of solar generated electricity.
- our environmental footprint through the reduction of our own CO2 emissions and voluntary carbon offsetting.

This year, the Roxy Jam Biarritz’s Carbon Footprint will be calculated, to measure the event's real impact on the environment and identify the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. The Carbon Footprint calculation will lead to concrete measures intended to help lessen our footprint for the following year. Ways of offsetting the emissions generated by the event are being looked at by one of the partners of the Quiksilver Foundation, ‘Cœur de Forêt’ or Heart of the Forest, an organization actively participating in forest preservation programs throughout the world.

RECYCLE…
- waste through selective sorting in collaboration with the Aremacs Association, who will help ensure that each piece of sorted trash collected during the event is properly recycled.
- canvas material left over from the event, which is to be sent to our facilities in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, so that it may be recycled into shopping bags, which are then distributed for use at our stores.

RESPECT…
- our playground, the sea, through various actions for sustainable development.
- the work of the Quiksilver Foundation’s partner associations, promoted at an information stand located at the competition site. Surfrider Foundation Europe, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, will be there at the Roxy Jam Biarritz with presentations designed to raise awareness about the chemical monitoring of water quality, one of the three projects supported through the Green Campaign.

Via the ‘Green Campaign’, centred on a pan-European water protection campaign, the Quiksilver Group makes use of its brand recognition and a no nonsense message, ‘No Water Sucks’, to raise awareness, especially amongst youngsters, to issues affecting the quality of our water sources.

Quiksilver Foundation

Our credo…
To be a Boardrider, is first and foremost to have a strong and unique connection to nature. However, it also involves preserving our natural landscapes - the oceans, mountains, and other natural ‘boardrider’ playgrounds - for the sake of future generations.
Out of this passion stems our commitment to defend, preserve and improve the quality of communities tied to the boardsports world, on a global level, by supporting projects in the areas of the environment, humanitarian and health issues, and youth education.

Our mission…
For years, the Quiksilver Group has, through its different brands (Quiksilver, Roxy, DC, LibTech), actively supported organizations working in the areas cited above. The Quiksilver Foundation, with its headquarters in Huntington Beach, California, was created in October 2004 in order to consolidate all of the company's philanthropic, humanitarian and environmental activities.

Our support…
Quiksilver Foundation supports many associations such as: the Surfrider Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage, ARVAM, Mountain Riders, Summit Foundation, Cœur de Forêt / Water Guardians, Atlantic Rainforest, the Botanical Garden of Saint Jean de Luz, Ansel, Aremacs in the area of environmental issues; Handicap sans frontières, Le cancer du sein, parlons-en !, Vagdespoir in the humanitarian and health field; and finally C.O.D.E. and the Belharra Watermen Club, in the areas of education and youth issues. quiksilverfoundation.org
