Packed house at the Surfer Poll Awards in California
Surfers put on the glitz for the 37th annual Surfer Magazine Poll Awards, hosted by Benji Weatherly, Fred Pataccia and Sal Malseka. Surfer Magazine readers voted for the top five women surfers and top ten men surfers. Stephanie Gilmore was awarded “best female surfer” for the first time.The two previous years the award for number one went to three-time world champion Sofia Mulanovich. The Peruvian was awarded the number two spot for 2009, recognized for her aggressive surfing style. “The women’s generation of surfing right now is really amazing,” Mulanovich said. “It’s never been as strong as it is now, and the level is crazy. I think the future of women’s surfing is just insane. It’s not going to be like one person winning everything, there’s going to be a lot of variety and hopefully I can still be a part of it.”Women surfers accepted awards for both their performance in the water and behind the camera. Tiffany Campbell and Andrea Lessler won the award for breakthrough film of the year Dear and Yonder. “Everybody is ripping really hard and we think that we should have more girls surf videos.” Monyca Byrne-Wickey said onstage while presenting an award. “I second the motion,” echoed Campbell. “there needs to be more women’s surf videos out there. It was such an honor to make this one.”Hundreds of surfers gathered at the Grove in Anaheim, CA (USA) on September 16th for a glamorous night in surfing (complete with red carpet.) Surfers that walked the velvet include Jen Smith, Carissa Moore, Alana Blanchard, and Stephanie Gilmore.Female surfers were noticed for their beauty, talent and strength. Big wave surfer Maya Gabiera was nominated for worst wipeout for her wave in Dear and Yonder. Gabiera’s nomination was in good company, and the award was ultimately presented to respected big wave surfer Ken “Skindog” Collins for his wipeout in BS!
