A unique aspect of surfing, compared to other sports, is that we are surrounded by marine life. Depending on where you surf, you may see pelicans, seals, dolphins, and turtles while sitting in the lineup. You may even be cut off on a wave by a dolphin (heck, give 'em priority!). But rarely do we see whales, or see them surf!

While body surfing in New Zealand photographer Michael Cunningham spotted a large fin headed towards him in the water. He quickly swam to shore and saw that the fin, in fact, belonged to an Orca whale! (Think Free Willy). There were several Orca whales spotted at Sandy Bay, and even more amazing, the whales began catching waves!

"They knew what they were doing and pulled out before getting into trouble," said Cunningham. "They looked like they'd done it before."

Check out these photos, and next time you're surfing, take a moment to appreciate the ocean and all of us creatures that love it so much!
