Duke's Ocean Festival
Queen's Surf, Kuhio Waikiki
24 - 28 August 2010
Sharing the stoke and trying to out-do your friends re-kindled at Duke's Ocean Festival
Waikiki beach boys and legends of Hawaii surf were honored today at Duke's OceanFest and a capacity summer crowd of visitors and kama'aina couldn't get enough. From Ben Aipa to Jock Sutherland and Rory Russell, the Hawaiian Airlines Duke's Legends Surf Classic was a lesson in history and classic style in one; while the C4 Waterman SUP Surf-Off and races showcased a favorite beach boy pastime with 21st century flair in their stand-up paddle (SUP) races and surf heats.
Both events were a fun flashback to a time when riding the waves was all about sharing the stoke and trying to out-do your friends.
Jock Sutherland, 61, is back in the limelight this week as Oceanic Time Warner Cable launches their MGM channel with John Severson's classic 1970 film 'Pacific Vibrations, HD', that Jock starred in. He headed up the MGM legends team today and pulled out all the stops with his switch stance maneuvering, always with an eye on the competition.
"There's a lot of camaraderie, but there's definitely the element of competition.," said Sutherland of today's surfing. "I was competing for the MGM team who has come out with some high-def versions of some old surf movies, and some of our guys were maybe in need of some location tips so I helped push them into a couple. We had a good time."
In the C4 Waterman SUP Surf-Off, 12-year-old Riggs Napoleon showed his versatility and uncanny ocean skills. Just last month Riggs paddled 32 miles solo between the islands of Molokai and Oahu, and today he took on some of the top SUP talent in the world. It didn't matter that he lost out in the quarter finals -- Duke's OceanFest is all about honoring tradition and perpetuating the ocean lifestyle for generations to come. Riggs is recognized as the torch-bearer for his generation of ocean kids.

FINAL DAY OFFERS GIANT LINEUP TOMORROW:
Tomorrow is the final day of this year's OceanFest and offers a giant lineup of beach and ocean events (see schedule below), culminating in the highly colorful and cultural surfboard parade and lei draping ceremony at Duke's statue. More than 30,000 flowers sewn into 570 feet of floral lei will be draped on Duke's bronze statue to officially close the 2010 celebrations. The parade will commence at 4:45pm at Outrigger Waikiki hotel and finish at Duke's statue at 5pm. All will be televised on the live webcast at dukefoundation.org and around Hawaii on Oceanic Time Warner Cable digital channels 250 and 1250.
Duke's OceanFest is a benefit for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation's (ODKF) college scholarships and athletic grants program that supports outstanding Hawaii scholar-athletes competing in water sports and volleyball. An auction of a one-of-a-kind Duke Kahanamoku longboard by Maui Longboards, as well as online and beach sales of commemorative 2010 Duke's OceanFest t-shirts will go towards the ODKF college program.
