Silvana Lima scores her first event win of the year
Claiming the Movistar Peru Classic title launches Silvana Lima (BRA) from seventh to third place, and adds a third ASP event title to her career, making the stylish Brazilian surfer, very, very stoked.

“I feel great!” Silvana exclaimed after exiting the water. “I knew I needed to put up high scores early on because Sally has been surfing so well all event. I have some really good boards and I felt like I have been surfing well. I’m so stoked right now!”

It’s no surprise that we saw Silvana on the podium at this South American venue. Always one to watch in the water, Silvana commands attention as she shoots down the line, slashes off the lip and blows out her fins with power and confidence.

“It’s the biggest result I have had since last year,” Silvana said. “It’s really good for me. I feel like I have been surfing well this year but haven’t been making heats. This is very good for my confidence and the rest of the season.”

Sally Fitzgibbons claims another second place
With no shortage of achievements throughout her surfing career (Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) qualified for the ASP Tour before the WQS season was halfway finished, winning the ASP WQS by the largest point margin in history in 2008) the young Australian has yet to claim an ASP event, biting the ankles of the winner with three consecutive second place finishes.

“Another bridesmaid,” Sally said. “It’s a good result all the same and great for my rating, but I want to win one really badly. Silvana was ripping though. I couldn’t really get into a good rhythm in that heat. I felt good all day, but she got the jump on me and I was never able to answer back.”
After the Peru event, Sally remains world number two, sitting 492 points behind Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) who still holds a healthy lead.

Stephanie Gilmore remains in the lead.
Having won three of five ASP events in 2010, Stephanie still commands a strong lead after the Movistar Peru Classic came to a close.
“It was an interesting event and we had challenging conditions throughout,” Stephanie said. “The past few days have been pretty fun on the lefts, but today it felt a bit between swells. It was too small for the left and still kind of big for the right. Equal 3rd is a good result but I felt like I have had a nervous energy about me all event. I hadn’t prepared enough on the righthander and that showed in my wave selection.”

The ASP Women’s World Tour has nearly three months of downtime before the Rip Curl Pro kicks off in Portugal, giving surfers time to free surf and catch some points off the WQS.
“I’m going to go home and then on some surf trips to Indonesia,” Stephanie said. “I’m working on a film project with Ava Warbick and I’ll use the time to recharge before the US Open in July and then onto Portugal after that.

Last year, 2009:
In 2009, the Movistar Peru Classic was held at Lobitos surf break, where Sofia Mulanovich (PER) claimed the title in front of a home crowd of thousands. She faced world champion and world #1 surfer Stephanie in the finals after defeating Sally in the semis by .07 points.

This year, the event was moved to the long lefthanders in San Bartolo, also in Lima, Peru. None of the ASP surfers (with the exception of Sofia) had surfed San Bartolo, which presented the challenge of familiarizing themselves with the wave before the horn sounds and their heat is on.

Sofia Mulanovich reaches the semi finals but doesn’t defend her Movistar Peru Classic title
After narrowly taking out wildcard Sage Erickson (USA) in Round 3, Sofia advanced to the quarterfinals, and eliminated Chelsea Hedges (AUS) before falling to Sally in the semis.

“It’s disappointing for sure,” Sofia said. “Sally was surfing really well and I couldn’t get the waves I needed. I started out with a strong heat, but got the best waves at the end. It’s another strong result, but I would have liked to make the Final.”
