5 a Day
Eat five portions of fruits and vegetables a day - On radio, TV or in the newspapers, it’s hard today to avoid this slogan. But why the hell should you replace your classic post-sesh cheeseburger by tasteless broccoli, your sweet and tasty candy bar by hard-to-peel tangerines? Because they have a positive impact on your performance and consequently on the fun you have!
So what are the benefits of fruits and veggies?
- They're packed with vitamins and minerals
- They're an excellent source of fiber and antioxidants
Vitamins and minerals are a great source of energy, which is what you burn when you go shred your local spot.
Fiber helps your intestinal transit, which means you digest easier and get more energy from the food you eat.
Antioxidants help you recover from an intense session, meaning that you don’t feel as sore as you should!
Why five portions?
Highly-skilled specialists decided so, don’t argue! But that's five portions altogether, not five portions of fruit and five portions of vegetables.
What’s a portion?
About 80 grams, but don’t bother weighing everything. An apple, a banana, two squeezed oranges, and a handful of green beans are all a portion.
Are potatoes part of the list?
No, sorry! French fries, freedom fries, however you call them are not part of the deal. (Yeah, we know it sucks!)
What about canned, frozen and dried fruits?
They count too. Frozen are by far the best, because they keep all the vitamins and minerals. Canned and dried are ok though, if that’s the only thing you have.
But fruits and veggies are often expensive!
That’s right. Yet, buying some fresh products in season can be a lot cheaper. Prefer your local farmer’s market when you go shopping. There you will be able to get season products, often cheaper than in supermarkets and of higher quality.
I don’t really like the taste of veggies, what should I do?
Well, keep in mind that the more you eat them, the more you’re gonna like them. If you really can’t stand them at all, a good tip is to hide them in your recipes. You can chop some carrots and pepper and add them to your spaghetti bolognaise sauce for instance.
