A Moment with Japan's Marii Baker

Marii, you just had a recent win in Japan, congratulations! Tell us about your win. まりい、最近の日本での優勝おめでとう！その優勝について教えて。

It's been 3 years since I last surfed the JPSA (Japan Professional Surfing Association) tour. It was the 2nd event of the season at Kamogawa, Chiba, Japan. It was a cold and rainy day. My old roommate "Kiyoko" was there to help me watch my 2 year-old-daughter. The waves were small and inconsistent, but I always got the best waves in every heat I surfed. It was funny because I won this contest six years ago in the same situation, except my daughter was there to see.
３年ぶりにJPSAツアーに復帰しました。千葉の鴨川で行われた２戦目で優勝したんだけど、その時は寒くて雨が降ってました。昔のルームメイトである「きよこ」が応援に来てくれて２歳になる娘の面倒を見てくれました。波は小さくて波数が少なかったけど毎ヒート、ベストな波に乗れた。おもしろいことに娘が大会会場にいたこと以外、６年前も同じシチュエーションでこの大会で優勝したことがある。

Let’s get some background info on you:

1. Where in Japan are you from? 出身は日本のどこ？

I'm from Aichi. Central East Coast of the main island.
愛知県。本州の東側の真ん中。

2. When did you start surfing? いつサーフィンをはじめたの？

I started surfing when I was 16. My dad started his surf shop called "Doors" at that time.１６歳のとき。父が「ドアーズ」というサーフショップをはじめたのがきっかけ。

3. How did you know that you wanted to compete? 大会に出るようになったのはなぜ？

When I just started [surfing], I saw my dad compete at a local contest. I thought he was so cool!
はじめたばかりのころ、父が地元の大会にでてて、「かっこいいじゃん」って思ったから。

4. What kind of support did you have with your community, family and sponsors? コミュニティー、家族やスポンサーからのサポートはあった？

My friends and family always supported me from the very beginning, and it was not long until I got my first sponsor. I rode for Wavelength wetsuits and Pacific Dreams surfboards at 17 years old. The next year at 18 , I started riding for Billabong and continued [competing] until I became pregnant at 27 years old.

友達や家族ははじめから応援してくれてて、１年後には初めてのスポンサーであるWavelength WetsuitsとPacific Dreams surfboardがついた。１８歳になった2年後にはBillabongにスポンサーされるようになってそれは２７歳で妊娠するまで続いた。

5. How long have you been competing? 大会に出るようになって何年？

13 years

6. Why did you stop competing? なぜ大会に出るのをやめたの？

Because I got married and had a baby.
結婚して妊娠したから

7. What is it like being a surfing mom? サーファーママになってどう？

Less surfing time, but I feel more pleased to go surfing.
サーフィンする時間は減った、でもサーフィンに行くのがもっと楽しく感じるようになった。

8. Why did you decide to start competing again?なぜもう一度大会に出ようと思ったの？

The end of last year, I had some Japanese surfer-groms, Reika, Kairi Noro, and Haruyoshi Shibutani stay at my house. They came to California to compete in the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) and WSA (Western Surfing Association) . I really enjoyed surfing with them and watching them compete. I thought maybe this year was a good time to compete again because my baby is old enough.
去年の終わりにうちに「野呂れいか、野呂かいり、渋谷はるよし」という日本のグロメッツが泊りにきた。３人はNSSAやWSAに出るために来たのだけど、一緒にサーフィンしたり彼らの大会を見に行ったりするうちに、今年またやってみるのもいいかも。子供ももう大きくなったしと思った。

9. What places have you traveled to? 行ったことある場所は？

Indonesia（Bali, West Java ,South Sumatra ,Mentawai islands）, Australia, Brazil, England, Mexico, and Hawaiian Islands

10. What are your favorite places? お気に入りの場所は？

I really love Bali, I used to go there often.
バリが大好き、よく通ってた。

11. What kind of waves do you prefer? 好きな波は？

Head high to couple feet over head, rippable waves, rights and lefts.
頭から頭半のリップしやすい波。レギュラー、グーフィーどっちも。

12. What size boards do you ride? ボードのサイズは？

5'5-5'7

13. Who are your sponsors? スポンサーは？

Harlem Surfboards, Cyber Shield Wetsuits, KPS Swimsuits, Doors Surf Shop

14. What are your future plans for competing? 今後の大会の予定は？

I'll go back to Japan and compete for the rest of the JPSA tour events in September and October.
９月、１０月に日本に戻ってのこりのJPSAツアーにでる。
